On 14 October 2001, Wales & West was replaced by two new companies.

Services in Wales & Central England are now operated by Wales & Borders Trains, and Wessex Trains in the West County and South West England.

Wales & Borders Trains has inherited all former Wales & West services in Wales as well as services between South and West Wales and Birmingham, London Waterloo and the West Country. The Company's headquarters are in Cardiff.

Wessex Trains is now operating all of the former Wales & West services in the South West of England. The Company's headquarters are in Exeter.
